From San José International Airport, the most common route is via Route 1 toward San Ramón, then Route 702 to La Fortuna. The drive usually takes about 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic, weather, and stops. From Liberia International Airport, the recommended route is generally via Route 1 toward Cañas, then Tilarán and Route 142 around Lake Arenal toward La Fortuna. This drive usually takes about 3 to 4 hours. For both routes, we recommend driving during daylight whenever possible, as some sections are curvy, rural, and darker at night.
